If you’re planning a home in Nairobi, tell the designer what a normal weekday looks like before you choose finishes or furniture.
Start with daily life
Describe a normal weekday and weekend: where shoes, bags and cleaning supplies collect, whether anyone works from home, and whether children, older relatives, pets or access needs affect the layout. List the furniture you will keep, measure it and show how people move between the entrance, living area and bedrooms. These details help your designer plan circulation and storage before choosing finishes.
Ask about the work you will receive
Depending on the agreement, the designer may prepare a measured layout, furniture plan, finish selections, lighting information, joinery details or shopping list. Ask whether measurements are included and whether proposed items are priced, available or merely illustrative. Confirm whether sourcing and installation support are separate services.
Plan around the household
If you will stay in the home during work, agree the room sequence, dust control, access and working hours. In an apartment, check management rules for lift use and deliveries. Share a budget range and decide which changes are essential now and which you can phase later.
Ask who will move or protect furniture you are keeping, clear the work area and handle daily clean-up. Put those responsibilities and the order of rooms in the plan before work begins.
