Nairobi Home Renovation: A Clear Planning and Handover Checklist

Plan a Nairobi home renovation with a clear brief, measured survey, ordered decisions, written scope, coordinated deliveries, and a documented handover.

A home renovation is easier to manage when the brief, scope, decisions, and responsibilities are written down before work begins. In Nairobi, also plan the practical logistics of the property: access, deliveries, working hours, parking, and communication with the building manager or neighbours where relevant.

1. Set the brief and priorities

List what is not working and what a successful result would look like. Separate essential repairs or functional changes from improvements that can wait. Note who uses the home, how rooms are used, preferred timing, and the budget range available for design and implementation.

2. Record the existing conditions

Before finalising a design, document the current rooms with measurements, photographs, and notes about visible defects or constraints. If a change may affect building services or fixed elements, discuss it with the appropriate building professional before deciding on a solution. Unknown conditions should be recorded and assessed rather than hidden inside a vague quote.

3. Agree the scope and sequence

Ask the designer or contractor to describe the work, what is excluded, who supplies each item, and what must happen first. Some decisions depend on earlier work: measurements can affect joinery, lighting positions can affect ceiling work, and finish selections can affect ordering and delivery. Confirm the sequence with the project team.

4. Coordinate selections and site logistics

Keep a dated schedule of approved materials, colours, fixtures, furniture, and expected delivery dates. Check access rules and reserve any shared facilities needed for deliveries or works. Record who can approve changes and how the cost or timing of a change will be explained before it goes ahead.

5. Use a simple handover checklist

  • Compare completed work with the agreed scope and approved selections.
  • List incomplete items or defects and agree who will resolve them.
  • Collect care instructions, product details, keys, and any warranties supplied.
  • Save final drawings, invoices, approvals, and contact details in one place.

Clear documentation will not prevent every change, but it makes decisions easier to track. For support choosing a professional, read our designer-selection checklist and browse the IDAK directory.
