An interior design qualification can lead to several kinds of work in Kenya; choose your next step by the tasks you enjoy and the evidence you can show.

1. Design studio and consultancy roles

Junior designers may assist with research, plans, presentations, sourcing and project administration under supervision. Ask prospective employers about the tasks, mentoring and opportunities to develop technical competence.

2. Residential and commercial projects

Designers may work on homes, offices, retail, hospitality or other environments. Each has different users, procurement arrangements and specialist needs. Build a portfolio showing the kind of work you want to pursue, while being honest about your role.

3. Visualisation, materials and furniture

Some roles focus on drawings and visual presentations; others involve material selection, supplier coordination, furniture or joinery. Learn how these decisions connect to budgets, specifications and the final installation.

4. Project and business support

Organised communication, documentation, supplier follow-up and site coordination are valuable skills. Responsibilities vary: ask what a role includes, who supervises it and which tasks require other qualified professionals.

5. Build your next step

Read the KENCID course outline to see how it describes career options such as interior design, space planning, design consultancy, visual merchandising and set design. Then review current job adverts and compare their tasks with your strengths. A course lists possible directions; it cannot guarantee a job. Build a portfolio around one role and seek supervised experience.
