Flooring for Kenyan Homes: Choosing a Finish for Interior Design

Compare common flooring options for Kenyan homes by room use, installation, cleaning, repair and product specification.

Flooring affects how a room looks, sounds and feels underfoot. The best choice depends on the room, the condition of the substrate, installation quality, cleaning routine and the product available for your project. Compare specifications and care requirements instead of selecting by appearance alone.

Questions to answer first

  • Is the room wet, frequently cleaned, exposed to strong sunlight or used heavily?
  • Does the existing floor need repair or levelling before installation?
  • Will the material meet the client’s maintenance and replacement expectations?
  • Can you obtain matching pieces later if a repair is needed?
  • What preparation, adhesive, underlay or expansion detail does the supplier require?

Common options and trade-offs

Ceramic or porcelain tile offers a wide range of finishes and can be practical in areas that need regular cleaning. Check slip characteristics, grout maintenance, substrate preparation and the installer’s method. A highly polished tile may not be appropriate for every room or user.

Resilient flooring can provide a continuous surface and may be comfortable underfoot, but product composition, wear layer, subfloor condition and installation method matter. Request the technical sheet and confirm suitability with the supplier and installer.

Timber and engineered timber bring natural variation and a different tactile quality. Ask about finish, moisture conditions, cleaning, scratching, refinishing and repair. The performance depends on the specific product and installation.

Terrazzo, stone and other specialist finishes can be striking but need product-specific advice on sealing, cleaning, load, installation and repairs.

Coordinate flooring with the whole room

Review samples next to cabinetry, wall colour and natural light. Check transitions between rooms and confirm finished floor heights against doors, appliances and built-ins. If the project involves existing services or a wet area, ask the relevant professional to coordinate the detail.

Keep product information

Record the brand, range, size, colour, batch where relevant, installation instructions and care products. Confirm what happens if the selected item becomes unavailable. Ask for a sample or installed reference rather than relying on a catalogue image.
